St. Philip has a special relationship with Malawi. It has been our joy to partner with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi (ELCM) for more than 10 years. Walking together within the accompaniment model of ministry, St. Philip’s Global Missions Team has dispersed $48,863 to support projects of the ELCM.
Malawi is a landlocked country in southeast Africa that has suffered cycles of drought and flooding. It is one of the poorest countries in the world. Malnutrition, disease and starvation are a daily reality for its population of 18 million.
Life expectancy in Malawi is only 50 years and infant mortality rates are high. Nearly 50 percent of the population is made up of children under the age of 14.
Despite all these hardships, Malawi is known as the “Warm Heart of Africa” because of the friendliness of its people.
We have assisted our Mponela sister parish with funds for a feeding center, a bore hole well and flooding disaster relief. St. Philip members have traveled to Malawi, connecting with the people there despite the language barrier and working together to improve their lives.
Our church as a mission to provide ongoing love in tangible ways to our neighbors in Malawi. But we also want to educate our community about their needs.
For Ironman athletes and their families: During the pre-race Saturday Pasta Feast, people from the St. Philip Global Missions Team will be present with opportunities for some fun and informational activities, as well as to answer questions about our partnership with Malawi.
