Music for Bread and Water

Sybille Nelson

An event held at St. Philip on Sunday evening, April 03, 2011, benefited both the Malawi Mission project at our church, and the food pantry at St. Mark’s Lutheran church. This event was orchestrated in memory of  Mrs. Helen Miller. She began the Grocery Bag Ministry at our church to support St. Mark’s Food Pantry over 20 years ago. When Alzheimer’s took over her body, her daughter, Selise Miller, continued this mission work.

Music was performed by international recording artist Hans York.  Information about him and YouTube concert segments can be found on his website.

A social gathering followed the concert included complimentary light appetizers and coffee.  A representative from Blue Ridge Vineyards sold award winning wine by the glass for consumption on the premises.

“Bread and Water was a great event for two great causes- the Malawi water project and St. Mark’s food pantry. Hans York was a first-class entertainer with a good mellow voice and his own creative songs, a popular offering enjoyed by many. The food was first rate and the wine was good. …we should do it again sometime,” said George Kegley of St. Mark’s Food Pantry

“….a feast of an evening; a Feast- Hans York, his music and his story; a feast and an opportunity to celebrate the life of a saint- Helen Miller; a feast of food and fellowship afterwards. Thank you to all planners, participants, and guests.” -Pastor David Derrick

“Please do this again, this event far surpassed my expectations in both music performance, and the food was AWESOME!”

“I loved Hans York’s stories and bought EVERY one of his CD’s.”

“Hans York was fabulous, his music touched my heart.”

“The wine was a wonderful pairing with the chocolate fountain.”

“I had such an enjoyable evening.”

“I wish this evening could have lasted longer.”

“I had no idea so many people get food at St. Mark’s.”

“Now I know where Malawi is on the map!”

It was great to see so many new faces at our church and to learn about our mission fields while having so much fun. With 107 tickets sold we were able to donate $342.00 to the Food Pantry and $342.00 to the Malawi Mission fund.

A million thanks to Nancy Shadix, Selise Miller, Judy Brammer, Wendy and Brian Johnston, Stacy Sauerbrun, Paul Economy, and Laura Latham who added their special touches to make this event such a success. And many thanks to you for coming to show your support!

Helen would have said: “Well done good and faithful servant, God bless you all!”
