Open Tomb!  Open hearts!  Open Doors!

Open tomb!  We are people tied to the resurrection of Jesus Christ!
As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here.
Mark 16: 5-6

Open hearts!  We are people transformed by this good news, marked with the cross of Christ forever!
We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians; our heart is wide open to you.  There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours.  In return—I speak as to children—open wide your hearts also.
2 Corinthians 6: 11-13

Open doors!  We are people called to proclaim good news with words of invitation and welcome!
I know your works. Look, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.
Revelation 3: 8

ELCA Disaster Response for Japan and the Pacific Rim

:

On March 11, one of the largest earthquakes on record with a magnitude of 8.9 struck Japan near the town of Sendai triggering tsunami warnings across the Pacific Ocean. The initial earthquake was followed by 30-foot waves, devastating Japan’s coastal areas, and more than 50 aftershocks. The death toll continues to mount as assessments of the damage are underway throughout the night. Local officials are also assessing impact to new technology such as nuclear power plants, transportation and communication networks.  When the dust settles and the headlines change, we stay to provide ongoing assistance to those in need. If you wish to make a donation, please do so through ELCA Disaster Response.  100% of your donation goes to relief efforts.

For some examples of prayers you can include in your worship and personal prayer life you may use the ELCA Worship resource Prayers for Earthquakes and Tsunamis.

Karagona, Malawi Flooding

:

Heavy rains throughout April caused the North Rukuru river to overflow its banks and caused the collapse of a major dike on the river. This has led to massive flooding in the Karonga district. At the end of April a total of 105 villages had been affected with 541 homes being completely washed away. Many of the homes in the region are built of bricks held together by sand and mud since they people cannot afford cement. This weaker mortar is easily disolved by the flood waters and nearly 5,600 households (28,000 people) have been affected.  Crops have been washed away or left underwater. Farmers have lost livestock. Shop owners have lost access to their businesses, so people are unable to sell or purchase resources needed.

The ELCA is responding through the ACT Alliance and with its companions the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi (ELCM) and the Evangelical Lutheran Development Service (ELDS) to provide immediate food aid and helping farming families to resupply crop loss. ELCM/ELDS is also working to rebuild 50 homes and one church destroyed in the flooding.

Severe Spring Storms and Flooding Affected the South

:
Deadly tornadoes have devastated parts of Missouri, Alabama, North Carolina and other states. Elsewhere, large portions of the country face a continued threat of unprecedented flooding throughout the spring and summer. Your help is needed to make a difference in these affected communities.  Please make a contribution through the ELCA website.

Virginia families need your help to rebuild

:
On Friday, April 8, and again on April 16, tornadoes ripped through Pulaski and Draper in southwest Virginia and through the eastern part of the state from the North Carolina border through Gloucester County. While the extent of the damage is still being determined in the most recent storm, we do know that 270 homes were damaged in the Pulaski/Draper area with more than more than half belonging to families with low incomes. Those homeowners and other low-income families in the eastern part of the state will need long-term support and assistance to rebuild.  To help, please visit the Lutheran Family Services website at www.lfsva.org.
